Hmmm. Working on video capture of #4. Looks like the second area of smoldering junk may be in the vicinity of the reactor well. Going to re-review heat images again. If the heat is coming out of the reactor well that is really concerning.

@momof3 Weren't they already handing out potassium iodide pills around that nuclear plant before this all began? You have to think there was already groundwater contamination, and Fukushima is just making it worse.

Does it strike anyone else as odd, how pristine those images of robots going in doors of #3 are? With all the water and a major blast the area looks perfect.

@Nancy You know, when you look at the right side of the image it almosts look like the reflection of people: english.kyodonews.jp My monitor is small and has crappy res, so please check it out and LMK what you see. I wonder if that image was really of them gearing up to enter the reactor building or something??

@Nancy i think that is the test run at buil 5/6 to see if the could open the doors, and the annoucer is just uninformed... i agree with your comment... and i also think the SPF pics are edited.... just looks to clean/undamaged to me on some of the video

@fitter Would not be the first time a reporter got something wrong. Even in hardened areas away from the blast I would assume a bit of water or something. Tepco is also claiming on their website that these are image of #3. I think they either made a mistake or are full of crap. :-)

I think more non-political evidence gathering like the crowd sourced geiger counters and Berkley's radiation testing may be the answer. The EPA has become such a political football and many govt. agencies get pressured by big industries that their impartiality can be questioned. Moving this over to the other board for more talk.

The Common (Shared) Storage Pool
In addition to these individual pools, there is a larger common spent fuel pool that is used to store spent fuel from all 6 reactors once it has been out of the reactor for 19 months and has cooled down. It has a volume of 3,828 cubic meters (29m x 12m x11m deep) and currently has 6,375 spent fuel assemblies in it. It is located 50 meters west of Unit 4. Reports also say that this pool continues to have water supplies but its cooling system is not functional.
Because this pool has water, and because the fuel is much less radioactive, it has not been a concern in the current crisis. allthingsnuclear.org

@pj There is absolutely the reflection of a person in that robot video. I can't quite tell if it is some sort of screen reflection or a wall reflection. It would be odd to take a picture of a video display since most programs have internal screen capture. I tweaked that image to pull that reflection out more. Should have it posted in a few.

Robotics experts at the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory just taught an old war machine some new tricks, namely radiation detection -- a timely acquisition of knowledge, for sure. Swapping out rocket launchers and machine guns for a suite of radiological sensors, digital cameras, and a GPS device, this modified TALON will be used to map the radiation levels (and create a visual output) surrounding the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The newly modified TALON landed in Japan just last week, joining an existing team of robot helpers already in use in the disaster area, including two additional TALONs equipped with sensors that can identify more than 7500 environmental hazards. Guns for Geiger counters seems like a good trade to us; check the video up top to watch the 'bot try out its treads.

@Nancy Yes, that video of the so-called entry into Reactor #3 looks VERY odd. Just like you pointed out, there's no discernible damage in a building that had a very strong explosion. How did the robots get into Reactor #3...where is the point of entry? Where are the robots located in the building in that video? Are those reflections of human figures in the upper right-hand corner of the video? Additionally, most of the video was about a number of subjects other than the robots entering Reactor #3.
