  • @xxx Thanks. Trying to figure out if it was specifically one of the units at Fukushima. I should have some new location overlays for 4 and 3 tomorrow. I found some more pre-quake images of the insides of 3 and 4 that gave more usable data.

  • hi all, just a few words from work...
    the 5 meters water flooded in #4 reactor building is likely to be a good new, in my opinion.
    If the building is roughly 40 meters long, 5 meters in the basement is 8000 m3. Given the fact it's not empty, I may consider there's something like 4000 m3 of water there. As there is about 150 m3 spread everyday on the SFP, if I remember well, that means that most of the spreaded water is finally leaking in the building basement.
    The good thing is that this radioactive water is not leaking to the sea or to the soil for now.
    The bad thing is that Tepco workers or robots can't enter the building; but given the reactor is empty, there are no need to enter the building in order to secure the area, in my opinion.

  • Downside is that 4 has a boatload of rods in its SFP. I expect they need to be removed, and/or an effective longer term cooling method must be derived -- that water is likely pretty contaminated, correct?

  • Good GMT+8 evening to all. And, of course, Tepco is still in firefighting mode.
    It's situations like below that keeps me on needles when I try to visualize what could unfold when a typhoon hits or even just skirts by ground zero in its present state of disarray and disrepair.

    Trying to locate a short circuit or a fitting torn loose or tracing the valve that got knocked by typhoon-churned debris -- right in the midst of a howling typhoon, or a weld that peeled off after getting slammed by flying sheetmetal. I can't help but also worry that many components of the facility are 40 years old already.

    From @NHK post, citing Tepco:

  • @Jocelyn Mayer I seem to recall early in the disaster that the #4 SFP was dry, or very close to it. That means the rods were exposed and started to break down which eventually led to the explosion in the Reactor #4 building. By the time they were able to add water to the pool, the damage had already been done, and continues to be done. If the explosion damaged the #4 SFP, then there is at least one leak in the walls and/or floor of that pool. They have been constantly adding water to the pool, so I'm making an educated guess that they do indeed have multiple and substantial leaks. Additionally, the heat of the fuel rods is boiling off substantial amounts of the water being added to the pool. Therefore, any water flowing out of that pool is carrying radioactive particles and will continue to do so until they can somehow get the fuel out of the pool and safely secured. As far as cracks/leaks in the entire facility allowing water to leak into the ground or ocean, think about this for a second: the facility has been subjected to more than 1000 quakes since the 9.0 monster, 13 of which have been 6.5 in magnitude or stronger, including 3 at 7.0 or above. Based on the above information, logic dictates that the Fukushima nuclear facility is completely riddled with cracks and leaking like a sieve.

  • @James Ward: yes, the fuel in #4 has been uncovered, at least twice in my opinion, there was an explosion due to hydrogen coming from damaged fuel / water, there fire due to the heat. Leaking water is radioactive that's why I think it's much better that Tepco find this water in the building basement than to have it widely leaking to the sea.

  • @Markfm: reactor buildings are likely to be designed being mostly tight as they are the secondary containment around the reactor...
    They might not be absolutely tight, but they have to be mostly: they are supposed to be slightly depressurized in normal conditions in order to avoid radioactive leaks.

  • Look at the pressure readings for unit 2 and 3 and tell me that c/v is pressurized. Look at the pictures of the bldgs. and tell me about 'normal'. Half of Tepcos mistakes were made when assuming 'normal' and 'what should happen'. There is still no knowledge of why unit 2's torus breached.

  • hey, they have been flooding the buildings for a month now. and one thing is for sure: there is not a single structure left that can hold any water. that's why they have highly contaminated water in the cellars and in the other buildings and in the ocean. there is no chance to "flood" anything.
