  • Can metal become irradiated enough to emit? If the water in the well has evaporated, could the metal itself give off heat? Chernobyl has a truck/car/cement mixer graveyard. The pattern could be caused by the beams partially blocking?

  • @Edano yes. we thought there were rows of heat on those older images. It is the roof trussing going over a larger spot and making stripes in it.

  • Can it be the well itself? Now the water has probably all evaporated. The metal could be highly irradiated.

  • from my experience on the reactor I worked on ... even with all the fuel out of the reactor when we shutdown to do tank work.. there were still so many thermals coming off the irradiated components that we had to maintain some minor flow to help out... so, it's possible that in a much larger reactor with shroud still in to have thermals..

  • It looks like todays is just on the edge of the well but it is so round and intense. The new thing I am using to try to pinpoint the well is the crane since the crane has to straddle the well and the sfp. That makes the well just barely over the mid line long ways so a small part of the circle may be over the long midline.

  • Hmm, what marie and dean are saying could be the thing. if the well structures themselves can be "radioactive" and give off heat. That could explain maybe. Still a bit puzzled by the two heat areas. I really need more images of the work floor of #4 before the quake. It could give some definitive answers.

  • At @Nancy I've thought that the bldgs. keep looking more and more deteriorated (aftershocks? water weight?) Maybe the 'movement' is beams and wall pieces shifting

  • @marie rich the newest images of 4 don't show any changes that I found. I was going through them yesterday and marking floor lines, placements of known items and wall structures. Nothing I found had moved and the floor on 4 looks the same. Look at those old heat images, everything is off to the seaside of the mid line of the building. Now today the hot spot on the mid line.

  • @Nancy - The breakdown of any isotope creates heat. The shorter the half-life, the higher the heat.

  • This is the first mid line hot spot that hot. A few faint heat spots on the midline earlier but not this concentrated and hot. Was there water in the well and now there is not? Have they been draining 4?

  • Hot spots showing now, but not earlier? Crack in the RPV itself from one of the earthquakes, or else in pipes/assemblies at the bottom of it, which let out the water that had previously masked the heat (by spreading it out -- water has very high heat capacity)

  • Pretty sure they have poured a couple million tons in, easily, based on the numerous reports of anywhere from 100 - 170 tons going in on a given day. The water had to go somewhere.

  • The well is kept full of water whether operational or outage. At first, they used shotgun approach and some water probably splashed into well, too. But when they got the big booms, the water was more directed. Water evaporates no matter what, but esp. with heat. So maybe it just dried up in the well?
