  • @Nancy: you might compute the approximative amount of water that was spread on #4 SFP, then the volume of 5 meters of the building basement, then you may find the 2 numbers are of the same order...
    A weak computing gave me 4000 m3 of water there (half of 5m x 40m x 40m); this seems a lot more of what RPV would contain (5m inside diameter, 20 meter high would be 400 m3...) but seems consistent (to me) with the amount of water that was spread in the building.

  • @Jocelyn Mayer so your saying we have equal water in to water out? Could the RPV drain elsewhere than the building without taking the rest of the water in the building with it?

  • @Nancy: I see no reason for #4 RPV to leak. Even if it did, the amount of water from there would not be significant: 400 m3 total (maybe less ?) when Tepco does spread 150 m3 in the SFP some days...
    The RPV could have leaked anywhere, in the building, in the turbine room, ... The only way I can see for it to drain water from the SFP would be the SFP flowing into the RPV through the refuelling gate.

  • I just noticed something else that doesn't add up. This interior image of 3. The fueling crane can not straddle the sfp. www.houseoffoust.com But on #4 the crane is over the SFP and almost at the end of the wall. www.houseoffoust.com

  • So if we think the water in still in 4's RPV why the heat? Or that heat isn't in the RPV. Like I mentioned I think it is in front of the Yellow cap to the seaside direction. Nothing really visible on images as being there.

  • @Jim Carver It raises some good questions that I think we need to keep an eye on. Hoping I can get more interior images to make a more reliable floor map of 4. Will be interested to see tomorrow's heat images. Anyone see any changes in the shared fuel pool building from yesterday. We thought we saw steam coming out of it and there was a power loss there for part of the day.

  • @Nancy: the crane can straddle the SFP (or no way to do refuelling...), this is a perspective distortion....
    About the thermal image: even if no fuel rods inside, the RPV is radioactive: water is, steel is, ...
    This could emit some heat. You can not the temperature isn't high; you should also take care: water and steel infrared photon emissivity is higher than concrete one, which means water or steel emits more photons than concrete when being at the same temperature, then appear hotter on raw images;
    don't know the exact difference, it depends on photon wave-length, actual temperature, ..., but you have to assume a difference of 1 or 2 °C may not be significant unless the pics have been reworked to take care about material emissivities.

  • They have only been monitoring the deep well once a week?! Surprise! And the sub-drains' water is more radioactive than before- surprise! We conducted nuclide analysis on subsurface water (sub drain) near the
    turbine buildings and detected Iodine-131, Cesium-134 and Cesium-137 on
    April 6th and 13th. As a radioactive dose of the sample collected on
    April 13th increased compared to that of April 6th, we received an oral
    instruction from Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency to strengthen the
    monitoring. In response, we increased the frequency of the sampling of
    the subsurface water (sub drain) of Units 1 to 6 and deep well located
    in the station from once a week to three times a week. We detected
    Iodine-131, Cesium-134 and Cesium-137 during the sampling survey on
    April 16th.

  • @marie rich @xxx Digging through images on 4 again. Should have some new mark ups but think I actually found the well on 4 on an overhead by using the crane as a landmark, drew lines back and then found the dark reactor well lip. seems to be about the area of some of the offset heat signatures.

  • @Nancy, take into consideration that 25 degrees Celsius is about as warm as the water in the Gulf of Mexico now. The lower the temp, the greater the variation in local distribution.

  • @Nancy Tepco's release on the common fuel pool (if true, heh) would indicate no problem. Elec. only lost for a few hours. At 2:34 pm, April 17th, the occurrence of a short circuit caused by the
    lack of repair of the end of the unused cable which is connected parallel
    to the power of spent fuel common pool caused the circuit breaker of the
    power side to open resulting in suspended power supply to the spent fuel
    common pool. However, at 5:30 pm, April 17th, the power of the spent fuel
    common pool was restored after the removal and inspection of the cable.
