Dean, quick sanity check. Jo is of the opinion that the reactors have water above the rods, that, for instance the -1650 reported for #2 is okay/fine. When I look at the NISA reports, in English, over multiple days, they seem to have a clear footnote that the negative numbers are referenced to top of rods (in an earlier version they called it "top pellet"). The FEPC handouts out of Wwashington are the same -- negative number means rods exposed (well, would be if they haven't melted off above the WL). What's your understanding?

And if we could find some of these reports we could sink them because there appears to have been no real attempt by tepco to even file the fukushima report so they obviously had not done any work required to meet the new standards .... this would be a major get out of jail free card for the insurance companies www.nsc.go.jp

@Tenzing,, it did alittle last nite but today is ok.. overcast with sun trying to poke through.... you know our Iodine levels were high up there in the air.. maybe they should say.. well.. today there's a 30% chance of Iodine showers..

right Nancy.. that note back there was talking back a few years... and as I understand it .. the workers have to install some shielding sheets about 3 tons each .. 36 total to protect the workers.. that shroud change would be interesting to understand .. mechanically ..

@tenzing Japans laws giving responsibility to the power companies was being looked at but hadnt been revised which is why they havent been able to intervene but I hope that we can demand tepco face the international courts even if they haven't broken laws in Japan the air and sea pollution break international laws.

@dean www.jsme.or.jp could you pull this report and give your opinion on what you think about it and the mechanical joints vs the weld.... and if you see anywhere that japan has switch to this as it would be totally different than the one posted by tepco... either way someone is using it and i can't quiite decide on the tee/toe boxes???

@dean we (some residents of Ashland Oregon) are in process of forming a group to address the potential effects of Fukushima Nuclear Events on our city and surrounding areas. We will be requesting the Mayor and city council to test the watershed, locally grown food products and soil for radioactive materials etc.

good plan Tenzing, I'm going to poke my nose into a few little "pull the string things" on what's public information concerning testing, emergency guidelines etc... I know fitter was going to get after the locals there for better information on when the 10 mile notifications are made and how..

@Tenzing found a site last nite that give the locations and test paratmiters for all the nuke houses in US... pay paticular attention to the verbage if its that ..... these are for "leaks and unplanned releasese... then they definer "leaks etc

Nancy: Radiation buildup in the BWR primary system occurs as the result of
both soluble phase and particulate phase transport and deposition
of activated species. Several industry initiatives have been
developed, such as HWC, depleted zinc injection, noble metal
chemistry, and control of feedwater iron, to reduce the transport
of radioactive corrosion products. Guidelines for each of these
topics can be found in the BWR Water Chemistry Guidelines and other
related EPRI documents.
Frequently identified problems that resulted in poor water chemistry
in operating BWRs include:
a. Improper operation of the condensate treatment system.
b. Improper operation of the reactor water cleanup system.
c. Leakage of condenser cooling water or air.
d. Inadequate design or maintenance of equipment.
e. Insufficient training or experience of plant personnel.
IonBexchange resin ingress and condenser tube leaks have been found
to be the principal recurring causes of off-standard water chemistry
in BWRs. Ingress of resins into the reactor coolant system has
caused more severe water chemistry transients than any other source.
Transients resulting from ingress of resins or other organic
materials been attributed, erroneously, to ingress of air (see
memorandum from J. Wigginton to Regional Branch Chiefs, 04-15-83). www.nrc.gov

Dean, thanks. I don't see any ambiguity in NISA footnotes asserting what the WL measurements are based on, and FEPC footnote is the same (actually, slightly clearer).

@dean what is your oponion on the spider equipment nancy was trying to identify.. space is a preiumin on the work deck so it would have be mulite functional... i think it may be to torque the stud/also reemove them--- the reator lid... and maybe part of the chemical cleaning machinery... it has what looks like flexable hose/and pumps.. seem to be rather high tech and has a work platform on the top.

It also at least partly explains difference in thoughts on how good conditions are. #1 had a slight blip up in WL, but is now reporting -1700 on both measurements. Core pressure is creeping up, continued slow, steady, rise. Core temp reports are going down, but I look at both WL and pressure as non-positive conditions.

fitter.. that spider equipment had me baffled.. so I guessed something to do with UT'ing.. then another person suggested a torguing machine for the stud bolts which made sense also.. I'm not sure how the details of the decontamination of the vessel is done but there was a photo of poly draped over part f the top and then the spray system washing down the sides of the reactor wall..
