There have been very valuable people, that have left here .why only they know and i wshed they would have opened their mouth's....cause as you did just now, it is important to know WHY people are getting upset..but to be fair, even the most die hard tech savy people are in need of letting steam go.....and rightly so ....ON the OTHER side.............i come to the tech scribble to read what the latest is and the other scribble..to disburse the gloom and doom helpless feeling...the humanitatrian side.........did i get that wrong ?

Improvement of the working environment inside the reactor building of Unit 1, Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

At Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, we are working on the
stabilization of the reactor of Unit 1 by continuing the nitrogen gas
injection to the reactor containment vessel and adjusting the water
injection rate to the reactor monitoring several parameters.
In order to solidify these efforts, we need to install and calibrate a new
reactor water level gauge. Also, we need to install a circulating cooling
system to improve the status of the reactor to a more stable cooled
condition. To do so, we have to improve the working environment inside the
reactor building.

At this moment, in preparation for the improvement, we are conducting the
visual inspection and measuring the radiation dose and the density of
radioactive substances by a remote controlled robot inside the reactor
building. From now on, we will install an ambient air filtration system*,
circulate air inside the reactor building for a while, filter the
radioactive substances and lower the density. After that, in order for
workers to enter the reactor building and conduct necessary works, we will
open the airlock. Before opening the airlock, we will monitor the density
of the radioactive substances within the reactor building and confirm that
the influence to the outside is low enough.
We will announce beforehand in opening the airlock of the reactor building.
At the same time, we will closely monitor figures at monitoring posts and
announce these.

* Ambient air filtration system
This system vacuums up the ambient air at the work area by a fan, filters
impurities and cleans the air.

@elainekirk Clean the air by filter is good in a CONTAINED room....however, there are no closed in rooms left or did i get this wrong ?..Aren't they all damaged, cracked open to a certain extend due to explosions ?

I think this is what the reporter I talked to yesterday was referring to. They have to clean up the air because they have to get humans inside to do some of the work to hook up the air cooling system. Some of the lower building rooms are probably somewhat closed, though nothing in there is really closed with the roof gone. They will have to go into the containment vessel in order to hook up the air cooling. Opening that might let out a bunch of radiation.

@Nancy Well, i get that BUT isn't this what the hold back on entering is about since the beginning, that the radiation is already too high to enter ?..so what, are they going on suicide missions to install the filters?

@nancy @veenoui and until the open it they dont know because their instruments don't work, is it possible they could trigger an explosion of the gases all those turning mechanisms are inside the containment

@Veen Oui I don't think they know for sure. This is a big risk to potentially hook up the air cooler loop.

@Veen Oui there are two things they plan to do. 1. install an air scrubbing system to try to make it sort of habitable inside to send humans in to do work. 2. install the air-cooled exchange system that Areva is sending. The air cooled system will be outside but needs to be hooked up.

I thought they had meters of water in the C/V. Unless the airlock is very high up, above the water level... And I thought they didn't trust the instruments? Venting the steam won't eradicate rad problem anyway, wiht all that rad water radiating up.

@elainekirk Anything with openings to the roof has some amount of fresh air either through a hole from the blast or vent pipes. I don't know how high the water in containment or other parts of the building are so unsure if they will find water too high inside.

@Veen Oui #2 had major humidity issues. Heat and moisture = steam bath. They may run into the same in #1. The air scrubbers might help a bit with pulling some of the steam out of the air but not huge amounts since it has water everywhere.

This is an extremely complex and difficult conundrum. I wouldn't want to be the engineers who have to figure out a solution. This is a no-win situation, with very high stakes for many. That's why it's important for our group to keep their feet to the fire, or high radioactivity (world-wide) will be allowed to become the 'new normal'. IMO, minimizing release by maximum pressure on Tepco and the GoJ to spend and do the utmost, and giving people the tools to minimize exposure, should be two of our most important missions.

@marie rich I have been trying to wrap my head around what we can do. Domestically grouping together and writing our govt and political officials related to things at home (rad monitoring, shutting down the old mark 1 units) We can also file letters of support or complaints with varying bodies. Those can help sway things but can also get picked up by the media - more attention to that issue. IE: CNIC files a case, we issue a letter of support and blast it via email to various media outlets that are still covering.

Cesium found in sludge
Relatively high levels of radioactive cesium have been detected in the sludge from a waste water treatment plant in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture...

...The prefecture's investigation found that the sludge contained 26,400 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram.
The solidified slag made from it contained 334,000 becquerels per kilogram, which is 1,300 times the level before the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Fukushima day in County Treatment Center (in Koriyama) announced the detection of radioactive cesium 64,000,002 becquerels per kilogram in the sludge processing. The County estimates that the radioactive material for sewage flowed into the large amount of rainfall.
