"Hardened Vent
In the 1980s, the NRC staff reviewed the potential for accidents more severe than those the
plants were licensed and designed to mitigate. In order to enhance the ability of all containments
to prevent and mitigate the consequences of severe accidents beyond the design basis accidents,
the NRC requested that all plants install a hardened vent. In the event of a core damage accident,
the hardened vent would allow reduction in containment post-accident pressure. Hardened meant
that the vent would transport hydrogen, steam and other accident products and release them
outside the reactor building. This would preclude damage to the reactor building and equipment
from steam and the possible hydrogen explosions.

In response to the GL 89-16 and the results of their Individual Plant Examinations (IPEs), all of
the nuclear power plants installed a hardened vent or demonstrated to the NRC’s satisfaction.
This hardened vent capability would allow BWR plant operators to vent post-accident airborne
materials by passing them through the water in the wetwell, thereby removing a large amount of
the radioactive material contained in the vent stream before venting. This added capability
increases the ability of the Mark I containment to mitigate the consequences of design-basis and
beyond-design-basis accidents."

Japan,(GGS NEWS) 04 May 2011 :Seabed samples collected some 15km from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant contained 1400 becquerels of radioactive caesium-137 per kilogram, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said. The level is more than 600 times higher than a maximum 2.3 becquerels per kilogram detected in the past off the northeastern prefecture of Fukushima. The samples, taken on Friday, also contained 1300 becquerels of caesium-134 and 190 becquerels of iodine-131, according to a TEPCO statement issued late on Tuesday after the first analysis of seabed soil since the March 11 disaster. Levels of the two materials were too low to be gauged in the past, a TEPCO spokeswoman said. The company did not say whether the levels were considered harmful.

Samples taken at another spot 20km away from the plant also showed similarly high radiation levels.

TEPCO said it would continue to examine radiation levels.

“We cannot say anything definite after just one probe. We will conduct more sample examinations and keep a watch,” the spokeswoman said.

The samples were taken 20-30 metres deep and three kilometres from the coast.

The Fukushima plant has leaked radiation into air, soil and ocean since it was severely damaged by the massive quake and tsunami.

Greenpeace said on Tuesday it had begun independent tests of water samples from the ocean near Japan’s crippled for radiation contamination.

The samples will be collected outside Japan’s 12-mile territorial waters in line with government rules, Greenpeace said. www.ggsnews.com

Princeton Security Technologies has secured a design contract from a leading robot developer to produce radiation isotope identifiers for radiation tests Japan’s nuclear crisis area. The client produces high endurance Underwater Unmanned Vehicle (UUV) that measures salinity, temperature and several other parameters in the ocean and sends the information back using global satellite telemetry.

The UUVs can function as nuclear detection devices using Princeton Security Technologies’ radiological isotope identification hardware. These UUVs are supplied to clients across the world, including the U.S. Navy, research firms and government agencies.

The UUVs will be installed on the shores of Japan's Fukushima reactor. Princeton Security Technologies, through its subsidiary Princeton Gamma-Tech Instruments, declared that revenue from the contract will commence during the Q2 of 2011. www.azosensors.com

@estacion and @elainekirk hi! Just spent the afternoon with my favorite new person who was born here in Hiroshima on Feb. 28. Her parents have been very concerned about the situation even though we are 500 miles from the plants. I can't image living in Tohoku with a newborn.

@elainekirk I have talked to several friends here and they tell me that the standards for children is a very big topic in the news here, and it seems lots of people are talking about it. No one agrees with it, so hopefully moves like the protest move of the parents today will become larger. There is almost no news here about radiation levels reaching the national news level except for what we all see on Kyodo. But placing the health of children in the crosshairs seems to be too much for everyone here.

@elainekirk I have heard no discussion about the lack of realtime data here. Many people outside of Tohoku are particularly focused on the food issue, since everyone eats fish several times a day, but if you were to watch the Japanese television news you wouldn't think there was a crisis
