@elainekirk I can't speak to what efforts are underway at the grassroots level. Many people here are still critical of the level of hysteria that the foreign press had reached during the week that they paid attention to the crisis, so there are probably some social inhibitions to seeking out and feeding the foreign press, but parents of children are a tough group to contain. If there is no movement on the issue here, I would be surprised if that steps didn't follow

@bo they may think they are protecting commercial interests but when foreiggn press headline cars imports being found to be contaminated it is an own goal

Very true. I don't know if folks here have checked out the Tokyo Progressive site here, it is run by an American so it has a western slant, but it champions a lot of progressive causes. I know they are currently working to track instances of censorship on the Fukushima issue. Here is an article on the children's exposures from today: www.tokyoprogressive.org

Also, my friend Mark Selden who runs Japan Focus, also known as the Asia-Pacific Journal has been printing some of the best stuff on the crisis. Mark is at Cornell, but he has a lifetime of experience and contacts in Japan. The Tokyo Progressive article follows his lead. I have seen a lot of Japan Focus articles reposted here, but the work they are doing deserves extensive reading, even the articles that are not such breaking news ones: japanfocus.org

@bo: I think the soil issue in schools is being used as a distraction from the really important problem:
We are facing a very important radioactive pollution, both air, land and water, which runs every day. How will we cope?
Let us assume that we must leave the contaminated area for a long period of time ?...

The issue of the children and all the people of Japan that have suffered from the Tsunami and it's after affects. Time must be extremely desperate for those with few resources, needing a place to be. They must be protected by the powers that be, or I fear for their future to be far worse than what it is now. The scenario that many of the Japanese face now, I can barely get my head around, seemingly unsurmountable levels of destruction and loss of life. Truly a Tsunami of Tears. This is why I have chosen to .... Got to go to work.... OXOXO
