I would guess he will say "nothing its all fine" but you never know he may know something. but that wont be till about 15hrs time.

    Japan,(GGS NEWS) 04 May 2011 :Seabed samples collected some 15km from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant contained 1400 becquerels of radioactive caesium-137 per kilogram, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said. The level is more than 600 times higher than a maximum 2.3 becquerels per kilogram detected in the past off the northeastern prefecture of Fukushima. The samples, taken on Friday, also contained 1300 becquerels of caesium-134 and 190 becquerels of iodine-131, according to a TEPCO statement issued late on Tuesday after the first analysis of seabed soil since the March 11 disaster. Levels of the two materials were too low to be gauged in the past, a TEPCO spokeswoman said. The company did not say whether the levels were considered harmful.

    Samples taken at another spot 20km away from the plant also showed similarly high radiation levels.

    TEPCO said it would continue to examine radiation levels.

    “We cannot say anything definite after just one probe. We will conduct more sample examinations and keep a watch,” the spokeswoman said.

    The samples were taken 20-30 metres deep and three kilometres from the coast.

    The Fukushima plant has leaked radiation into air, soil and ocean since it was severely damaged by the massive quake and tsunami.

    Greenpeace said on Tuesday it had begun independent tests of water samples from the ocean near Japan’s crippled for radiation contamination.

    Princeton Security Technologies has secured a design contract from a leading robot developer to produce radiation isotope identifiers for radiation tests Japan’s nuclear crisis area. The client produces high endurance Underwater Unmanned Vehicle (UUV) that measures salinity, temperature and several other parameters in the ocean and sends the information back using global satellite telemetry.

    The UUVs can function as nuclear detection devices using Princeton Security Technologies’ radiological isotope identification hardware. These UUVs are supplied to clients across the world, including the U.S. Navy, research firms and government agencies.

    The UUVs will be installed on the shores of Japan's Fukushima reactor. Princeton Security Technologies, through its subsidiary Princeton Gamma-Tech Instruments, declared that revenue from the contract will commence during the Q2 of 2011.

  • @RBeaner I have had to stop reading some of the articles that I have come across because they are that horrifing, but true... and the issues need address... I think as a group we could accomplish alot, but the data needs to be corret and also a "sulution" suggested... not just exposed... those in the US should goggle what we did to the reiver at The Hartfod Plant back in the early 50's/60's inthe name of "not creating panic and lack of ?????? i don't know what to put up on the second part.... I just wonder How could they get away with it????

  • What I think I will do this this: As others have mentioned things should be documented with a reliable and factual source as the basis for any guidelines. Things should be presented in proper context. IE: the info on using brita type filters for water comes from a couched statement from one of the US federal agencies. They stated that they work but they don't want to make an official statement mostly out of liability or concern it would be taken as a mandate. Anything compiled would be done as suggestions if you have concerns about your water or food here are some mitigation tactics and not statements such as "your food is poisoned because of x - y and z." I have an email into George regarding the website and will mention this also. Sounds like maybe that section of the website should get hammered out first then we could make twitter "bites" of it to send out.

  • @Nancy, as to the effectiveness of GM counters for food measurements, the real deal would be a scintillation counter like this one for gamma-emitters: www.gmi-inc.com . Similar machines are tailored to the use with beta-emitters. The fundamental difference is that because of the limited travelling range of beta-emitters the sample is dissolved and dumped into a scintillation cocktail, a brew of aromatic molecules like toluene that convert radiation into light flashes that can be counted by photomultiplier tubes. Since the source is immediately surrounded by the cocktail the conversion from beta-particle to light flash is quite effective. In comparison GM detector sensitivity is lame, but still may work particularly for gamma radiation. If a GM counter is effective in detecting thyroid contamination, it also picks up contamination of comparable level in milk or your steak. The problem I see is that the radiation levels may be so low that you have to hold the detector very close to the source and that you may have to collect counts for a very long time. The statistical standard error associated with the counts is determined as the square root of the counts. This means you must accumulate at least 400 counts minus the background to arrive at 5% error. At low level contamination, the enterprise may quickly turn into something larger than just holding your GM counter to your food.

  • @RBeaner the location is aluding me, I have it save on my other computor, I belive it on the east cost... it was involved originaly in the "manhattan Projet" of WWII it my menory serve me correctly, but i have been trying to find info on something else and it always goes back to this plant (they us the intials SC) but I find it rather disturbing to read and have just tried to focus on the info i need, I will go back and find the location be for using the info..

  • @Nancy should read "after you subtracted the background counts" instead of "minus". The intensity of the radiation weakens with the distance from the source according the inverse square law.

  • Fitter -- I suspect it is Hanford that you mean, see my prior post (link to Wikipedia article). It is west coast, developed specifically for the Manhattan Project and a big time pollution issue for the Columbia River.

  • @Peter Melzer Thanks,, I saved that. I remember reading something at Berkley that discussed how they do their testing and it was rather complex. I think some of the frustration people are having is not having any testing between them and their food supply. The only real tool available are geiger counters to the average person. Also don't want people getting a false sense of security with tools like a geiger counter and thinking that is a definitive test.

  • @Peter Melzer @Nancy A GM is worthless for food. Alpha particles cannot travel very far in substances, as you pointed out the test sample must be ground up and put through analytical testing.

  • @Jim Carver thanks, there has been info about what produce is more or less suceptible to uptake of radiation. I have also seen pretty universal cautions to wash thoroughly all produce to try to knock off dirt and dust. I think the mention about water testing in Alaska might now be worth pushing for. I understand some of the reasoning why the US doesn't want to do tons of testing. Those places highly likely or the first place it will show up should get tested. Same with seafood, test the species most likely to be contaminated and start testing right before the estimated time to work through the food chain. IE: high up the food chain fish that have broad travel patterns. Salmon, tuna etc.

  • @Jim Carver , I wonder how the manufacturers can vouch for alpha detection with the devices like @bo has got. Already beta detection will be difficult with a GM, because of absorption of particles in the food material itself and in the detector's membrane. They do pick up a medium energy source if only air is in the path. I know from own experience. I have never worked with alpha detection and cannot speak to that.

  • @fitter If you are talking about what was done in the 50's, 60's and even 70's, I'm not a big critic. We (the US) were at war, so releases ocurred. The world is a different place today, and we are trying to clean up the messes of the past. Superfund, et al, should be fully funded to repair the mistakes of the past. These enviornmental degradations belong to all americans in the pursuit of peace and superiority over communism.

  • @Nancy That article shows me one thing is happening and it concerns me quite a bit. Normally relatively soluable compounds containing Cesium are not as mobile as once thought and would be dissolved and distributed in ocean waters. What I believe is happening is these compounds are now forming colloids and are precipitating at greater distances from the scene. This indicates that the concentration of dispersal may be greater in certain areas and be concentrated due to ocean current patterns. Hence my concern for rich waters near Alaska.

  • @Question... on the articles of the Hanford plant, it refers to the sludge tanks... have had many goggle serches send me to the same plant different sites... 1) the containment blus have a very complex secondatry cleaning/balancing system ... I was trying to find "how hot the sludge would be, and how long it would remain hot, and what type of heat signiture it would have if a tank of it would have a heat sign... etc...??? in these article it talks about the "residule rad's from the filter system" foster heat and them create 1) hydrogen gas 2) Nitrous Oxide... they call it to be a) explosive b) flammable c) needs venting.... can someone clearly explain the "in laymans terms" the effects of the nitrous Oxide in this situtation.... We have descussed hydrogen gas/steam/ and other excelerents, but I't appears that they may be other gases not mentioned that may be contribburting factors... they call nitrous oxide stabe, non-flammable, but refer to it as an Oxidizer and has expolsive issues at different senerios.... the damage at the area where this equipment sits (assumed by BP#1) is the same area there is considerabe wall damage..... hope you can undrstand the question

  • @Peter Melzer True, interesting you mentioning the membrane also. When Rutherford did his experiments at the turn of the last century, as I recall he had to use a vacumn chamber so the alpha particles would not be caught by air molecules before hitting the gold foil.

  • @Jim Carver The only way to know for sure is to sample. It is beyond me why the EPA/FDA is not enthusiastically sampling. If I were them, it would give me a wonderful outside US data point. I honestly don't think it is cover-up, I think it is sloth..Some Quote Hanlon's Razor " Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"

  • @Nancy, the counts owing to radioactive decay distribute in a Poisson distribution which stipulates its own statistical math. For the inclined, This site explains it quite nicely: stattrek.com and lets you play with numbers. I may emphasize that if count rates are very low compared to the background, you may have to count a long time, perhaps 10 - 20 minute/sample, to ensure the statistically significance of a change in count rate. Then, you may have to sample over quite a large number of samples and they have to be representative in order deliver a reliable result. One sample of rainwater for example is not going to be enough for your region. In sum, the mere counting of all samples may already take a day or two. Hence the delay in reporting. By contrast air sampling like in these phone column-shaped detectors they seem to use around Fukushima is continuous. I frankly do not know how they determine a significant change. That may not be a consideration because rates and changes are much greater.

  • @Nancy It's unfortunate that virtually the entire Berkeley NUC program is at a conference this week. The last milk testing, which was the worst of them, was for milk with a Buy By Date of 5/2. That tells you how long it's been. And it had been all upward until they stopped testing.

  • There's a lot of common sense stuff. No frilly veggies that sit and accumulate. Broccoli may have protective properties (when cooked) but think of it. If it rains while it's flowering... Large-leafed things are bad mostly if you live in I-131 range, because it imgests easily through the leaves. That kind of thing. Flat parsley, not curly.

  • @RBeaner I agree with what you are saying, to a point... not in refernce to the 50's (and the superfund and it is Underfuned) but some of what is permmisable today... is not due to war or ignorance... I eat oyster form the downstream side of our NPP, they move them to a cleaner river for "a regulated lenth of time" then are sold... when the NPP here when off line from the tornado I was looking at some of the data.. its there if you look hard... but think I will give up or lower my consuption of Oyster.. I have grown them in the past becaue they are such a great natural fitler.. then they are turned over to be put on a bed in the bay....

  • @Nancy Any vegetables that take up large quantities of water (large, leafy vegetables) are going to be concentraters of radioasctivity. Spinich, cabbage, lettuce and cellery...etc. , these farmers should be paid to cultivate their fields and then dispose of thier crop in an approved manner as Very Low Level Nuclear Waste.

  • @fitter, as to the Hanford tanks, I understand nobody knows the content of some so they have difficulty in telling what chemical reactions are going on. As to contamination, I am sure they take samples of the sludge, the groundwater and the soil surrounding the tanks and run spectra to figure out what's in them. Similar strategy needs to be applied to debris, sludge and other waste in Fukushima so that it can be decided how to deal with it.

  • Hi all...de-lurking. I'm not sure if this has been posted. EPA has decided to lesson monitoring because of decreasing radiation levels. Due to the consistent decrease in radiation levels across the country associated with the Japanese nuclear incident, EPA will update the daily data summary page only when new data are posted. Historical daily data summaries will continue to be accessible from this webpage.

    After a thorough data review showing declining radiation levels related to the Japanese nuclear incident, EPA has returned to the routine RadNet sampling and analysis process for precipitation, drinking water and milk.

    As always, EPA's RadNet system of more than 100 stationary monitors will continue to provide EPA scientists near-real-time data on the slightest fluctuations in background radiation levels. Due to the consistently decreasing radiation levels, EPA is evaluating the need to continue operating the additional air monitors deployed in response to the Japan nuclear incident. EPA's will continue to analyze air filters and cartridges from all air monitors as they arrive at the laboratory and will post the data as available..

    In accordance with normal RadNet protocol, EPA will be analyzing milk and drinking water samples on a quarterly basis and precipitation samples as part of a monthly composite. The next round of milk and drinking water sampling will take place in approximately three months.

    It is important to note that all of the radiation levels detected by RadNet monitors and sampling have been very low, are well below any level of public health concern, and continue to decrease overtime. EPA continues to work with federal partners to monitor the situation in Japan and stands prepared to accelerate radiation sampling and analysis if the need arises.   • @Peter Melzer (this is only from menory, don;t want to be guilty of what i was just saying)... but the one article that I drilled into from the NRC stated that they have done bore testing on the sludge... 2) a different Book article claims.... that the residule "heat" creates hydrogen gas and Nitrous Oxide, the book then claims this is explosive and flammible... and needs to be vented.... when i google nitrous oxide it states it is not flammable but it is concerdered to be an oxidizer.... could you explain what they mean by oxidizer "inlaymans term.... not in Atoms...

  • @LM I hope they would keep west coast air filters doing the daily testing. Those will alert to increased levels or if the constant low levels could indicate build up of longer living isotopes. I could see them changing what they are testing but just stopping isn't good either.
