In a normal operating reactor, decay heat is responsible for about 20% of the energy output. If you had a pile big enough, the dacay heat would be enough--and the fact you could/should have natural uranium or something else so there is NO fission. The advantage here of course would be that no nasty fission by-products are created as well.

@Jim Carver : the global problem is the centralization and monopolization of energy producing. the energy producers are more mightyful than governments. increasing renewables can help decentralize and solve this problem. but the fight against the monopolists will be tough and must be endowed by governments. we have to force our governments. fossil energy is just stupid, shortsighted and suicidal.

@Edano It is and I have always been for a more de-centralized approach. If a certain technology company makes its prototype storage capacitor widely available next month, the problem of regulating AC current becomes easier.

@Edano No kidding, even on the state level here in the US. I asked our state rep. about passing a law to allow grid tied wind & solar system. That is where you sell your excess power to the utility when you over produce and buy back off the grid when you need more. Sounds simple. She said there was no way she would even attempt to do it calling it political suicide. That Xcel has that much power at the state level that the state won't even mess with them. They are also blocking the plans for transmission lines so wind generation
in our state could grow.

@Nancy I checked in on selling the power back and it's not worth it. The best way to go is just use what you produce and store the rest as DC. That's why the new capacitors will be so good. No more ineffcient batteries. I have a wind machine and it's no problem using all I make.

@Jim Carver when we looked at set ups it was going to be more complicated and expensive to install the gear to switch back and forth between grid and the wind setup.

@Edano Right, and if we produce more of our own, that cuts into their profits. So it's our international duty to make more of our own. BTW I'm not in favor of conservation, I believe that to be a defeatist attitude that goes nowhere for the future.

yesterday we had the movie "The 4th Revolution - EnergyAutonomy" on tv. if you have the chance in your countries, watch it. it is a documentary about the numerous projects all over the world and the fight against OPEC, IEA (international energy administration) and the banks that are not willing to support the efforts. it is very encouraging, there is good progress in the third world. did you know that there are 2 billion people without any energy in the world ? it's incredible. they have no chance and waste their lives. what helps them is a simple solar panel and a battery. price: 140 $.

@Edano I have seen a number of small initiatives in Africa and South America to bring things like cell phones, laptops and home generated power to low income undeveloped areas.
