  • TOKYO (AFP) – Japan may be at the forefront of robotics and its children raised on cartoons of robot heroes and villains, but the country has so far had to rely on US-made machines for help tackling its nuclear crisis.

The massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami knocked out reactor cooling systems at the Fukushima nuclear power plant northeast of Tokyo, where workers are battling to prevent radiation leaks and a total meltdown.

Although Japan is reliant on atomic power and leads the world in developing humanoid machines and industrial robots it has not developed any robots to tackle nuclear accidents. news.yahoo.com

  • @cat I can see it, tho foggy. It'll sound silly, but when it's foggy like this , I tilt the led screen away from me and get better contrast. I can see more. Like # 2 & 4 are still smokin'
by marie rich 5/5/2011 12:47:17 AM

  • @cat still visible here, too. The fog is heavy, but steam is still clearly visible puffing from #2. Also in close-ups there is a bright flickering light, down low at the edge of #2, hopefully an 'intentional' light source...
    by Askwhy 5/5/2011 12:50:21 AM

  • @marie rich Have you been smoking?

  • @Markfm for teppycam or the press releases?
by marie rich 5/5/2011 12:55:38 AM

  • I'm puzzled. I reloaded it several times. It says it is live, but it is deffinatly reading 10pm, if that is the time at the bottom left
    by cat 5/5/2011 12:55:48 AM

  • @all This was posted last night, and promptly deleted. Is old news, but it raises the question of a thread between Tepco and various telecommunications companies, including the one providing the new live feed. Rakuten is a primary shareholder in the Tokyo Broadcasting Systems Holding Co. (refer to post last night 9:30pm-ish) Rakuten has had prior relations to Tepco.....Rakuten to acquire 54% stake in Tepco's phone subsidiary
search.japantimes.co.jp And yet very recently Tepco attempts another re-step into telecommunications: Seeking diversity in the face of a reduced monopoly status caused by deregulation, TEPCO is moving into communications. It owns a major stake in Tokyo Telecommunication Network (TTNet, local and long-distance phone service). TEPCO is in a telecommunications joint venture with nine other Japanese electric. www.marketwatch.com Does this step on Rakuten's toes? Does Rakuten profit if Tepco struggles? Or does corporate monopoly stretch across various market lines? Who is truly providing this live fee, and are we just simply seeing what they want us to see? ***This was just me thinking outloud in the presence of others*** Keep up the great work on this live blog! Extremely valuable source!
