@lillymunster there are a lot of Japanese lessons on youtube. I study with a teacher so I don't know them well, but my wife has watched a few (I'll ask her). Reading is really problematic because of three different scripts, two syllabic and one pictorgraphic, all used in the same sentence. If I knew a source to really learn the complexities I would have more mastery. Sorry.

@bo No problem. The mixture concept doesn't throw me completely off. Reminds me of having to computer code in different computer languages.

NHK is saying that there is no radioactive substances on the unconscious worker. Huh! I'm getting the impression that if someone dies at Fukushima it's going to be from heartburn.

@LM well we remember how they blamed an overexposed worker a few weeks ago for his exposure, saying he must not have been using his dosimeter properly. These are just disposable people, as we have read in many reports. Bukarim, homeless and foreign workers.

@all Conflicting reports on MOX fuel at Fukushim I are really beginning to bother me: Nathalie Bonnefoy, from the MELOX Division of AREVA La Hague, France, said, "In this site, all the MOX fuel has been already loaded in the reactor (it started in October 2010)," no MOX fuel is stored on site here. On others sites, a part of the MOX fuel is stored on site (every 18 months you have to renew one third of the MOX fuel because it has lost efficiency). According to Bonnefoy, four reactors in Japan are burning MOX fuel fabricated by AREVA; the first loading took place in December 2009; AREVA signed contracts with eight (out of eleven) Japanese electric companies to supply MOX fuel, but the French group has no reactors of its own in Japan.

At the time of the magnitude 9.0 earthquake, Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 was operating with 32 mixed oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies and 516 low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel assemblies in its reactor core. In other words, less than 6% of the fuel in the Unit 3 core was MOX fuel. There were no other MOX fuel assemblies (new, in operation or used) at the Fukushima Daiichi plant at the time of the accident.

@bo, did you see the news story last week, I think in JapanTimes? A temp worker took a job, he was down by Okinawa, to work up in the disaster area. They told him he would be driving truck as part of the recovery effort. The put him on a bus that went to the NPP and they put him to work at the plant doing liquidation work.

It's tragic. Do they really think we're fools? We have a level 7 nuclear emergency and he just got a little hypoglycemic. You're right..there's no liability if there is no family to answer to...they might as well lie about the circumstances so it'll look better than Chernobyl.

@lillymunster I did. Should we expect less? It reminds me of that video of workers in middle east thinking they were going to work in Saudi Arabia (as I recall) and then being told on the plane they were going to Iraq (during the worst there). They all started screaming and protesting, but they were on the plane and couldn't do anything about it.

@all I do think that AREVA does protest too much, and then appears to contradict themselves. USgov wants to back AREVA's conservative take on the amount of MOX fuel on site. If anyone remembers or has access to the link that documents MOX deliveries later than 1999 to Fukushim I, would you please post the link. Thanks

Would be quite illuminating (not literally, OK?) to touch base with individuals who have actually done liquidation work at Daiichi Ground Zero... There has to be hundreds already (including, especially, foreign recruits who might be lurking here).

The awful truth is that radiation poisoning can happen over minutes, hours, days and weeks and a person can be decontaminated and sitting watching tv when his/her systems fail. It's a load of garbage.

@lillymunster this should come as no surprise. Clearly there are people for who this whole event is interpreted as a cost/benefit analysis. And they are making key decisions. Think of TEPCO's reluctance to use seawater for 2-3 critical days at the beginning in order to "protect assets"

@bo This is why the corporate office people from TEPCO should be removed from management of the crisis. Get some of the people from NISA and some of the countries university experts to consult on what to do and let the engineers call the shots. Too much is being mishandled by TEPCO at the corporate level.

On a slightly related topic, I am presenting a paper at one of the two conferences I am going to next week on articles that I found in military journals in the 1950s talking about what commanders should do on the nuclear battlefield if they have troops whose dosimeters show exposure to a lethal dose, but the troops are not yet showing symptoms. Of course the articles suggest that these troops be used for suicide missions.
