@Bobby1 Apparently AREVA has not always used Zircaloy-4, but an experimental alloy M5 in their fuel assembly control rod guide tubes. This has caused US NPPs to ask them for a re-design, and abort the usage of (what they labled) "defective" MOX fuel. prismwebcastnews.com

Those simulations/predictions really did scare me though, (I think I posted this yesterday) as the worst-case scenario still seems entirely possible... I just can't wrap my head around just how bad it could get for the people of Japan, and the world. :(

@Bobby1 Yes...Definately within the realm of possibility that the control rods were never successfully inserted in reactor 3 due to design flaw and/or defective alloy. Ironically enough, I believe that I read that the guide tubes are actually fabricated in the US and then sent to France. Will try to find the source really quick.

What makes me nervous about putting too much weight on the NY Times article is in the use of the word 'suggests' to describe what the authors are reading before them. As they say: "The document also suggests that fragments or particles of nuclear fuel from spent fuel pools above the reactors were blown “up to one mile from the units,” " Their choice of 'suggests' suggests they're not entirely sure that's what the document means to say.

@smoss The plot thickens. Tepco, after having falsified data, accepted MOX fuel that was known to be defective. They did not inform the public of a breach, no evacuations were ordered prior to the explosion they knew was coming.

Areva made the mos fuel.TRANSPORT OF MOX FUEL FROM EUROPE TO JAPAN "The first transport of MOX fuel from Europe to Japan initiated in 1999 the process of recycled nuclear fuel return from Europe to Japan. It complements the transport of spent nuclear fuel from Japan to Europe (over 170 shipments) and the vitrified residues return from France to Japan (12 vitrified residue shipments). Similar MOX fuel transports will be performed in the years to come on a regular basis."

@Ralph Unger If you did a little deeper, you find that, back in the day Areva and Belgonucleaire formed a consortium called Commox (Areva 60% / Belgonucleaire 40%) to fabricate and distribute MOX fuel.

@all Will end this day by asking for a bit of help. I have not been able to track down verification of any shipments of MOX fuel assemblies to Fukushima I beyond the one that took place in 1999. If you have seen documentation, please post. Thanks!
