  • @Jill in Sweden There are many isotopes for which we have no data. It will be easier to determine health risks for people in the northern hemisphere with a full set of data.

  • @Bobby1 yes, absolutely. One thing I was thinking about is that the differences in levels of Cs is not that big between US and Europe (and they are low at this altitude they are measuring - ground is another issue)- which I suppose indicates quite rapid even dispersal over the entire hemisphere. I would have guessed larger differences. I suppose it tells us that if this had been a bit more serious (I am not saying that it is not serious) and they had lost control over the entire plant area and cooling of the common spent fuel pool - we would all get quite an equal share of the emissons (of course much more locally in Japan) ?? I guess that is why the authorities here were so nervous in teh beginning about the temp (and potential cracks) in the common spent fuel pool.

  • @Jill in Sweden You have to be careful about assuming the measurements we have as being proxies for a whole continent. In Chernobyl, hotspots 50 times the mean concentration were routinely found. Without a truly dense measurement situation to obtain the distribution of nuclides, there will be significant numbers of people exposed to much higher levels of radionuclides than are indicated on the CTBTO graphs.

  • @Edano, thanks for that animated video, wow! Notice that it's shortly after the Unit-3 blast on March 14th that radiation levels when sky high. Me thinks that may have been the major radiological event of the disaster to date.

  • @Bobby1, yes I am very well aware of it - some comes down with the rain in high concentrations. But still I would have expected a bigger differences even at the few datapoints that is there. The peak value from the initial events can be followed around the hemisphere and they do not differ so much. Anyway, no use discussing this too much before there is more data

  • @dean well, not quite. the c-pressure was normal in the first days after the explosion, and the thermal images seem to suggest an intact containment cap.

  • @Edano, I wouldn't be surprised given the blast of radiation in the region shortly after. Maybe that yellow object we were puzzling over the other day is the blown off reactor lid. But wouldn't there be a bigger infrared signature of the overhead was looking straight down into an open reactor?

  • @Edano, to your theory, there are a number of photos of U3 that seem to show steam coming from the reactor's location (center East side), in addition to the fuel pool near the South-edge. In short, the steam sources suggests there are two bodies of hot water. Here's an example : media.oregonlive.com

  • On the caps on #3. The RPV cap is likely still on due to some heat images that show a signature in a ring around like the gasket is leaking. The yellow containment cap, as far as the things I have looked at is anyone's guess. I do not know if the radiation readings give any sort of indication about it. Containment went to atmosphere pressure around the 20th based on older data Jo found. Things coming out today are hinting at possibly a big pressure drop for containment on the 16th. I have seen steam with pressure pushing it out of the reactor well tons of time from various angles. It isn't like the lightly wafting sfp steam. It seems to have pressure as it comes out. So if the corium has leaked out of the RPV does the containment cap (yellow one) situation become more of an issue?
