  • @wtm I think the 1 foot ground drop is more widespread -IIRC that's how much the coast has dropped all along. I haven't seen anything that implies a specific change of level at part of the site

  • @Rob, what good are the tents ? Can't close them up, you have to let the steam out of them, or you are back in the possible hydrogen buildup situation again. So if you have tents that leak, what good is it keeping the radiation in? Nope, they are mostly just to cover up things so you can't see whats going on underneath. Just "PR" covers !!!!

  • @dean: I agree. Pouring water on it is like putting out a propane fire with diesel. If there were a way to feed it with dry bentonite, silica, and lime I think it would die faster.

  • @wtm They 'tents' are designed to be "sealed" with filtration for hydrogen and radiation.

  • By now they probably expect there's a healthy pool of water below where they have hot radioactive stuff. I expect they don't want hot radioactive stuff to burn through whatever steel and concrete is still there, to avoiid a big steam explosion.

If I was a tepco employee at that plant, I have no doubtt (ok believe) that I would stick around and do what I could. If I was a subcontrctor, I would run away.

  • @dean The tents are rubberized (?) fabric, so pressure should be minor issue, but that filtration system better be high-capacity...

  • corium is suposed to be able to melt through and then be dispersed on the concrete floor which will tend to cool some .. only the WHAT if question that takes it out of the building.. assumption only

  • You don't think, then, that it's a case where there's a likely air gap, water below, so if the corium melts through the RPV it'll drop and contact sitting water, steam flash explosion?

  • the other day i calculated the corium volume. it think it was like ~20 m³. this is like ~ 1 mheight in the vessel, a bit more because the bottom is round.

  • @RBeaner - Who are you talking about? the guy that died? He had just started! His job had just begun! Let me see if I can dig up a job posting...btw- early on I read that they were hiring homeless people. Most recently, I read that they were having trouble keeping workers at the plant. I'll post links once I gather them, Beener. And, yes, I am very inquisitive.

  • RBeaner what I am used to is.. the evacuation system monitors showing that evacuation is needed then every one evacuates.. We have a remote emergency control center and from there plan the re-entries to do anything... once that is set up I would be involved in re-entries.. but it gets to a level of VOLUNTEER only
