The strongest earthquake ever recorded in Japan at a magnitude of 8.9 struck the country on March 11. Below is a timeline of events following the earthquake and tsunami and the effect on nuclear power plants in Japan. March 11 - May 12
FRIDAY, MARCH 11
* The earthquake took place at roughly 2:46 p.m. locally. The epicenter was located about 130 kilometers off the east coast of the island. * Eleven reactors shut down in the quake effected area * Cooling problem at TEPCO's 4,600 MW Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on the northeast coast of Japan. Fukushima Daiichi is a six-reactor plant that uses GE, Hitachi and Toshiba boiling water reactor technology. TEPCO confirms water levels falling inside reactors at the plant and says it is trying to avert the exposure of nuclear fuel rods by restoring power to its emergency power system so that it can pump water inside the reactors. * Fire reported at Tohoku Electricity Co.’s 2,100 MW Onagawa nuclear plant, which has since been extinguished. The Onagawa consists of three boiling water reactor units.

Oyster Creek has had drywell concrete corrosion concerns, betcha' Fuku does too...
Disturbing questions remain, raised not only by citizens, but by the state Department of Environmental Protection, NRC Commissioner Gregory Jazcko, scientists who reviewed Oyster Creek drywell data at the Sandia National Laboratory and the ASLB. The commission's relicensing was premature because safety issues remain unaddressed including: Exelon's failure to honor its commitment to perform 3-D analysis according to standards set by the Atomic Committee on Reactor Safeguards to determine the actual extent of corrosion. Exelon's use of overly optimistic drywell thickness in its analysis.
@Rob in SF The holes reported by TEPCO are from the RPV into the steel CV (the thinner yellow containment) which is suspected to be leaking down to the primary containment (the thicker yellow containment). That's all we know for now, concerning the melted fuel inside reactor #1.

@Rob in SF Mind, though, that they only suspect water is leaking from the steel CV into the primary containment, not melted fuel, but anything is possible at the moment. Water infiltrates very easily through concrete so it tells us nothing about the integrity of the various containments.

yeh wtm... the control rod penetrations are the first to start leaking from TMI history,, that leaks corrium out gradually vice just melt through a big hole.. that also tends to spread out the corrium so I invision part still in the vessl and other parts out

TEPCO said, "the pressure decreased rapidly in the furnace may have stopped manually," explained. UKVal.. I would be surprised if they use carbon steel for the control rods which has a much lower melting point,, however at the point where melted fuel hits that area.. it's useless anyway because ZIRCALOY has a much higher melt point than either carbon steel or stainless steel

@Rob in SF We're at stage 3, the zirconium must have oxidized long ago. Stage 3 - Long-term Erosion Stage Oxidation of metallic species will eventually become complete, and in- ternal heat generation will take place by decay heating only. The fully oxide melt has been considerably diluted by concrete decomposition products by this time. The corium temperature is much lower, but the con*urn solidus has been reduced by addition of the concrete decomposition products. The concrete erosion continues at a reduced rate, and the slower gas release produces a bubbly flow regime. The aerosol and fission-product release is small, but continues for a long period of time.

@Dean, that my thought also, whats still in RPV is chugging, but what has melted through and dropped, I believe has melted all the way down to the concrete, and it sitting there, hot and melting concrete. You can see the high CAMS stats in the D/W on #3.
