  • @ all... I think they initially had .. cool the reactor and get flow IN THEIR HEADS.. but it went from there to cool the corium, re-establish flow.. which doesn't equate.. it's a different game

  • @All, looking back at all the reactor stats the last few weeks, can't we assume by them that the RPV have been melted through by now, or still have corium dripping through them, into the CV, which has been breached into the drywell. Some of the pressures showed the drywell was outside air pressure, so that is breached somehow. We are starting to see some of the pressures go back up, which might be because the corium is clogging the breach.

  • @dean - do you think that the fact that they had co-sited control rooms at Fukushima (2 reactors per control room) would have contributed to the chaos when all hell broke loose or would things have anyway been too far gone for it to make much difference?

  • we have dose levels to save life with volunteers only ..(I"m not sure of a single person who wouldn't pick up dose to do that)... the other one is liimit to safe machinery and the plant.. that line of vollunteers is shorter

  • 400 fuel assemblies in #1 , ~size: 0.09 x 0.09 x 4 (m)
    400 x 4 x 0.09 x 0.09 = 13 m³ corium
    reactor vessel diameter = 5 m
    13 m³ / (pi x 2.5²) = 66 cm corium height in rpv at 100% damage + control rods
    is this correct ?

  • dual reactor control rooms would have made it worse from an accident of this magintude.. I believe that there are common systems to each to contend with as well as.. a ton of alarms,, annunciators going off ... you all can't imagine.. I've been through a loss of commerical power with delay to get diesel on line due to trip.. and you just absolutely have to know that plant inside and out to recover

  • @UKVal, the Drywell is beneath the reactor, not same as basement, which is around the outside of the building and the reactor.

  • MCCI talk should start trending again.

    In postulated severe accident scenari in which the vessel fails, the molten core (or corium) would interact with concrete. This concrete is either the third barrier, as in current plants, or it is a sacrificial material as in the EPR temporary retention pit. Considering recent experimental findings and the high risk significance to determine the basemat failure, it is recognized that the MCCI and its radial/axial corium erosion is not modelled adequately and large uncertainties subsist, especially for the late phase of MCCI. There is also a lack of experimental database on the role of stratification between immiscible oxidic and metallic phases. Further on, the knowledge on the cooling mechanisms by top flooding of the ex-vessel corium pool needs to be increased because it influences significantly the calculated results of stop or not of the basemat erosion, which affects the containment integrity. A large experimental program is underway within SARNET to tackle these issues. It is complemented by modelling, code benchmarking and reactor calculations.

It looks v looks good - one suggestion - would it be useful to have an up to date (and updated) 'what has happened up until today' section? A bit like the world-nuclear site pinned above but more up-to-date (and updated by us). Proven facts only tho, not theories.
