  • ...In hindsight, we could and should have made it clearer that there was little prospect of detecting and measuring leukemia and solid cancer incidence at the expected rates. For the most stressful aspect of the Chernobyl results, in the final analysis, is that the accident surely caused thousands of deaths that cannot actually be identified. The Chernobyl fatalities, in that sense, are like the deaths of unknown soldiers.

  • Companies in no-go zone begin radiation checks

Companies in a village near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that have been granted permission to continue operations have begun daily monitoring of their workplace radiation levels.

The government expanded the 20-kilometer evacuation zone around the plant last month, due to the risks associated with long-term radiation exposure. Residents of Iitate Village, 30 kilometers northwest of the plant, must evacuate by the end of May.

But the government has allowed 9 companies in the village to continue operations on the condition that they monitor and report their workers' exposure to radiation.

A local precision equipment maker began conducting worker radiation checks on Monday.

Some 60 employees received instructions on how to use a radiation dosimeter. They then measured and recorded their radiation levels.

The company's workers are to take exposure readings on a daily basis before going home from work.

The company says it is also using various strategies to reduce the amount of radioactive matter that enters the factory, such as keeping windows closed and moving outdoor air conditioning units above the ground.

  • The accumulation of contaminated water and the existence of radioactive debris continue to hamper work to stabilize the reactors at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. Meanwhile, South Korea and China have agreed to greater cooperation with Japan in nuclear safety and disaster management. "Water and debris hamper Fukushima work"

  • Delayed Decontamination Facility Poses New Risks
    by Panserbjorne9 5/23/2011 5:12:36 PM

  • The construction of a decontamination facility to treat hundreds of thousands of tons of radioactive water is facing a delay of one to two weeks, authorities said Monday, raising new problems of where to store the toxic water and increasing the risk of seawater contamination.

  • Just a question...If it were a parked putzmeister at 3 wouldn't the frame be static? Even with pixel changes, the legs of the stack don't appear to move.

  • @Markfm, thanks. I find the label "empty" somewhat strange in the light of thermographs showing higher temps over the reactor well than over the pool. I was researching this puzzle and could not come up with anything palpable in the Tepco relases. I wrote up my thoughts to date here: brainmindinst.blogspot.com . The story has got a somewhat provocative ending. I do not like conspiracy theories much, but figured the heck with it.
by Peter Melzer 5/23/2011 5:13:18 PM

  • Barring any new news, I'm sticking with any signatures being due to #4 being hot from the rods having been there -- the RPV itself becomes nuclear waste over time. The thermographs I've seen weren't outrageously high (you have probably seen newer ones than I have -- I've only looked a couple times, max temp I saw on the RPV was on the order of 30C).
    by Markfm 5/23/2011 5:21:46 PM

  • @Peter Melzer They have had to spray those hot spots outside the sfp in the past. There have also been hot spots on the deck near the reactor well. Something is out of the ordinary at 4. Dean mentioned a reactor well will have residual heat even after fuel is removed. I don't know for sure if that fully explains all that is seen at 4.

  • I personally see enough in the literature discrediting Busby's fringe claims that I discount anything he comes out with hugely. I say what I disagree with, why, then let it go.

  • @Peter I just noticed this on #4 SFP, from the article on building a new support structure under it: "The water inside the pool remains hot, at around 80 degrees Celsius."

  • Difficulty awaits in reconstruction

But many areas in the region, still struggling with the removal of debris, have not yet started concrete reconstruction work. If the council works out a reconstruction vision without establishing a rapport with people in the devastated areas, they will only feel that it is trying to impose its vision on them. The council members should realize that their job is difficult. The devastated areas are vast and the situation is different from area to area.
