  • Ah, the daily hijack the conversation has begun. :-)
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:27:53 PM

  • @Meretisa Your family should be taking kelp or some other iodine source, of course you should be concerned. I have been having lung & sinus issues and I normally don't get allergies this time of year.
    by Bobby1 6/7/2011 6:28:40 PM

  • @Bobby1 sigh. :( son had major episode- turned blue- the other night. nebulizer helped and doc said to just stay home and monitor
    by Meretisa 6/7/2011 6:29:20 PM

  • What still doesn't have much info is where the rods for Kashiwaza actually are. Were they delivered there or FUKU. Can they store them at Kashiwaza if the locals banned their use? Kashiwaza is on the other side of Honshu and is on a coast. So if they can't use them at Kashiwaza.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:29:59 PM

  • @Tenzing I will tell you the same thing I told Leth when he tried this the other day. Knock it off or go on moderation. If you have something to contribute go right ahead but trying to purposely derail conversations isn't going to fly. So stop it.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:30:57 PM

  • @Meretisa oh my gosh... you ought to think of a high-quality air cleaner... milk and cheese are big no-nos too. Wash the veggies thoroughly.
    by Bobby1 6/7/2011 6:31:37 PM

  • by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:31:46 PM

  • Sorry, that is for Kashiwaza.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:31:57 PM

  • lilly.. I would like to see the spread sheet
    by Dean 6/7/2011 6:33:01 PM

  • @Bobby1 I have one. turned up to highest level and put purified water in humidifier (he is mouth-breather) and have had good 2 nights now, but was terrifying. I do. he likes his cheeses though. we've been staying inside as well. monitoring the surface ozone, pollen, and daily rad readings to determine when/if we go outside. hot temps too (upper 90s)
    by Meretisa 6/7/2011 6:33:56 PM

  • @Dean Sent you a link via email.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:34:13 PM

  • TY
    by Dean 6/7/2011 6:34:24 PM

  • It looks like the 2001 shipment to Kashiwaza went directly there rather than being part of a joint shipment to multiple plants? So it likely was deposited there. Would TEPCO move it to FUKU and would they need formal approval to transport it?
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:35:15 PM

  • @Meretisa I have been having horrible breathing issues for the last week. Wasn't sure if it was left overs from having a virus, pollen or something else.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:36:10 PM

  • cnic.jp is this an example of one to add to the spreadsheet @ lilly
    by Dean 6/7/2011 6:37:00 PM

  • @Meretisa Grass and weed pollen are showing really high where I am, not sure if that is the core cause. Grass pollen really bothers me in spring but it is usually hay fever type symptoms, not breathing issues.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:37:41 PM

  • @lillymunster yeah. pollen high here too. you can see it some days floating in the air like snow. :P
    by Meretisa 6/7/2011 6:38:10 PM

  • I must return home.. not feeling well.. will return
    by Dean 6/7/2011 6:40:57 PM

  • @Tenzing No we are simply trying to let conversations happen here without constant hijacking and interruptions. Now knock it off unless you have something technical to add.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:41:40 PM

  • I have to head out. too.
    by Meretisa 6/7/2011 6:42:02 PM

  • @Dean thanks Dean, adding to the spreadsheet. The CNIC doc had more info.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 6:42:07 PM

  • @Dean- hope you are going to be ok. HUGS.
    by Meretisa 6/7/2011 6:42:09 PM

  • @nancy which shipment went straight to kk?
    by elainekirk 6/7/2011 7:00:33 PM

  • This PDF answers a bunch of the questions about MOX disposition. It is from March of this year and if correct. The 1999 MOX is what they loaded at FUKU
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:00:45 PM

  • @elainekirk 2001 shipment from France went straight to KK and from what this PDF says it is sitting in a SFP there. www.nuclearconsult.com
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:01:28 PM

  • I am really curious what 10 years in a spent fuel pool would do to those rods either to degrade them or lower their capacity?
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:02:27 PM

  • @lillymunster That is quite easy to compute. Dean or Radioguy would know how to calculate that, I think. I could do it myself but I would need to research a bit as I don't know the decay rates by heart.
by Pedro Jesus 6/7/2011 7:03:57 PM

  • Dean would perhaps... who else did we see calculating decay rates and products? Bobby1 maybe?
    by radioguy 6/7/2011 7:05:31 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus Decay rates and what about degredation of the cladding etc. since just being in a radioactive environment makes things brittle or wears out metal etc?
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:06:41 PM

  • Having the fuel be less effective is one thing. What about less stable after 10 years of sitting?
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:07:35 PM

  • Lurking a bit today...@Nancy Should we now assume that the #3 SFP had no MOX? And if so...does this potentially lead to a different origin for the explosion, given MOX's susceptibilities and it's presence in the core? Just wondering given the different nature of 3's explosion.
    by LM 6/7/2011 7:08:17 PM

  • @lillymunster For what I've read about the zirconium alloy cladding, the degradation over 10 years is practically negligible. I'll give it a recheck when I come back from work later tonight.
by Pedro Jesus 6/7/2011 7:08:32 PM

  • A small discussion on spent fuel, and pools, including some graphs on decay: en.wikipedia.org
    by Markfm 6/7/2011 7:09:52 PM

  • @LM If this info is all correct than there was no mox in 3's SFP. I will probably still keep digging to make sure we didn't miss other shipments.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:11:43 PM

  • The issue is that these are not spent rods in question but fresh fuel. They have to keep MOX in the SFP because it is too volatile to just store it normally.
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:12:53 PM

  • @LM Realistically, that is if TEPCO was honest about it, there should be no MOX in the SFP. If, as reported, they just started using the MOX in the fall, none would have been spent yet. The question was whether any of that other clutter of rod shipments made it there and where it is.
    by radioguy 6/7/2011 7:14:50 PM

  • @Thanks lillymunster. Given the different nature of 3's explosion and the presence of MOX in the core I wonder if it was a prompt criticality in the core that caused the detonation and not one initiated in the pool. Hmmmmm.
    by LM 6/7/2011 7:16:57 PM

  • @radioguy For all we know, or guess, the MOX will have melted inside the RPV and will have started to corrode its way down to the CV floor along with the rest of the uranium fuel. There is no MOX in the SFP. That explosion, actually, all the explosions are still a mystery that needs solving.
by Pedro Jesus 6/7/2011 7:18:43 PM

  • @Nancy, we were discussing last night (early morning) that #3 could actually be a BREEDER reactor ??? Someone posted an article, and in it, it states that there is a BREEDER reactor in Japan somewhere? Might this play into the explosion in #3 and the use of MOX fuel there ?
    by wtm 6/7/2011 7:19:16 PM

  • @radioguy Way too many unknowns! That is the question isn't it...and I'm not sure we'll ever get a straight answer given concerns over higher plutonium contamination from MOX.
    by LM 6/7/2011 7:19:26 PM

  • How much mox would 210kg of plutonium make?
    by elainekirk 6/7/2011 7:20:37 PM

  • well, the half lives of the fuel materials are enormous, we do not have to calculate them, but i guess the carrier material degradation is enormous too and will limit the storability.
    by Edano 6/7/2011 7:21:48 PM

  • @wtm FUKU isn't the breeder reactor in Japan. Monju is the fast breeder. There are piles of photos on my site and on the web via tourists and TEPCO's documents showing the inside of #3 from various years. It is a generic poorly designed old as dirt BWR that should have been shut down already. ;-) en.wikipedia.org
    by lillymunster 6/7/2011 7:22:23 PM

  • @Lilly, TY
    by wtm 6/7/2011 7:22:53 PM

  • @elainekirk pu is 7-8% in a mox fuel, so this makes 3200 kg fuel.
