  • @elainekirk i was pondering that... wondering if it's the anti-nuc movement influencing the reporting somewhat
    by Panserbjorne9 8/22/2011 8:58:46 PM

  • @elainekirk There's an important milestone that just passed which may account for a slight uptick all over the place: school has started again. Summer is over, and unlike BP Deepwater Horizon at that milestone, this hasn't ended or been kicked under the rug completely. People got out of the summertime mode and "Oh, what? That Fuku think is still going on? Wasn't that like Spring or something?"

  • France has had more interest and news than elsewhere. I think it is a combination of France being invested in nuclear and having a decent sized Japanese expat community.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 9:00:33 PM

  • @lillymunster France has also been relentlessly PRed for decades so they can relate to the BS personally.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 9:01:31 PM

  • @Panserbjorne9 Isn't it interesting on that abalone story that they instantly jump to the tsunami as apparently trashing the breeding success rates, then go as if that's the truth. Granted, the adult breeding population was reduced by 30-50%, but the birth rate was dropped apparently 90-100%. Perhaps they just don't breed well in irradiated waters.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 9:07:45 PM

  • @RadioGuy exactly, why ignore the other possibility? absurd.
    by Panserbjorne9 8/22/2011 9:18:38 PM

  • @Panserbjorne9 I guess it shouldn't surprise us. It's the equivalent of "You'll be moving back into your homes in the exclusion zone soon." I hope anyone that does sea-cultured foods in that area realizes they need to start looking to relocate.

And as Gunderson points out, now that they're incinerating all the waste, loaded with Cesium, it's all being aerosolized again and is being redeposited elsewhere, and is now running with the rainfall down different rivers and polluting the sea around different rivermouths.
    by RadioGuy 8/22/2011 9:25:49 PM

  • "We'll have to cut down our abalone catch for the next few years while we wait for the young shellfish to recover," Miura said.
    If you say so.

  • @Cryptococcus ah, you have discovered "the game" :-) The government has done this before. They release bits of information before the drop the really bad news.
    by lillymunster 8/22/2011 10:18:37 PM

  • @dean Hi Dean!

@Cryptococcus, it is common in US settlements to put some sort of statement that the company accepts no blame and the settlement isn't admission of their guilt. They also put gag orders on the injured party to prevent them from talking about the incident or injury.

    by Cryptococcus 8/22/2011 10:22:05 PM

  • @Cryptococcus oh yes they all pay people to monitor the internet and post pro co policy comment. If you want to know how bad companies (and governments) in general are then read the piece furter down this article about the members only forum, somebody from the company in question will have been masquerading as disabled www.latentexistence.me.uk

  • @Cryptococcus of course they do and sometimes they get caught because they do it poorly. Everything from hotels having employees post fake favorable reviews of their location up to big companies like Bank of America. Google HBGary, they are one of the worst.

They can provide cheap entertainment when it becomes obvious one has shown up somewhere but the PR person doesn't realize everyone is on to them. :-)

  • Abstract:The Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future has just released its recommendations on how to resolve America's nuclear waste dilemma. The Blue Ribbon Commission has provided some sound analysis and introduced some new ideas, but overall, it has focused more on the symptoms of America's failed approach to nuclear waste management than addressing the system's structural deficiencies. U.S. nuclear waste management must transition to a more market-oriented system. Moving the responsibility for nuclear waste management away from the federal government will be difficult, but it is necessary for an economically rational and sustainable resolution to America's nuclear waste dilemma. www.heritage.org

  • @Cryptococcus ah that translates into absolving gov of responsibility so that companies can go make deals with very poor countries to dump waste on them or use criminal gangs to dump it or use it in concrete for houses, sidewalks etc

  • @Cryptococcus www.heritage.org The short version: let the private sector deal with nuclear waste so we can screw that up like we did the financial markets, leaving society to fix our mess while we run off with the profits...
