  • translate.google.com is good for text-oriented PDFs, but not the graphics. For instance, right click on the NISA Report 92 URL in the top sticky, select "Copy Link Location", then at translate google.com do a paste. The whole link URL should appear there. Set Source language to Japanese, click Translate, and it will pop out the translation.

  • In most cases you should be able to get them by right clicking on whatever it is that then opens up into adobe, and do that "Copy link location" step. As long as google can find it on the Web it will try to translate (though it gags on large documents)

However, there was some information in the Twitdoc about each reactor and a bequerel is a bequerel in any language...right? :-) Sheesh, I think I've taken a crash course in Japanese. I am going through 20 pages of translation from last night's NISA and TEPCO conferences right now.

  • @UKVal I've used translate on PDFs buy pulling it into google docs as a PDF with the checkbox ticked to extract text from PDFs, then shared it, grabbed the share link, fed that to google search and then translated when google asks. It doesn't OCR images though.

  • @UKVal That association btw WHO and IAEA really is disturbing. Must say not much surprises me these days though. One thing did however - my regular online weather forecast at www.foreca.com have just added an air pressure map to their list - it wasn't there last week. :)

  • If you just want a decent snapshot, the NISA Seismic Damage summaries (like #92 in the Sticky) give a good overview, including capturing the major plant parameters. They cover a lot of topics. Unfortunately the "clean" translations, on the NISA English page, seem to be days behind (as compared to Georgia only being 1 day back)

Answr 31,000,000,000 fissions.... the fission of one gram of U235 liberated 1MW. THIS is the energy of 3 tons of coal, or about 600 gallons of fuel oil per day - which produces about 1/4 tonne of Carbon

  • Interesting. That eruption happened at Moonrise opposite Neptune-set. I've seen Neptune involvement in so many big quakes lately. I'll post comparative charts later for those into the study of planetary interactions.

  • I think for nuke organizations/agencies to be really honest, though, they need to calculate one level 7 accident every 25 years into their calculations about clean emissions and environmental impact. I much prefer carbon over cesium.

  • Nuclear reactions liberate a large amount of energy compared to chemical reactions. One fission event results in the release of about 200 MeV of energy, or about 3.2 ´ 10-11 watt-seconds. Thus, 3.1 ´ 1010 fissions per second produce 1 W of thermal power. The fission of 1 g of uranium or plutonium per day liberates about 1 MW. This is the energy equivalent of 3 tons of coal or about 600 gallons of fuel oil per day, which when burned produces approximately 1/4 tonne of carbon dioxide.

  • I think the speculation about secret Uranium enrichment in reactor#4 is way off base. Anyone who knows anything about ORNL and the Uranium enrichment process knows how difficult it is, requiring a lot of space and other contructions not present there.   • @Sin also, if Japan wanted to build a bomb, enrichment wouldn't be the problem, they have close to a ton of Plutonium already from regular civilian use.. plus they have proper full-scale enrichment facilities etc. elsewhere
