  • I wonder..in our world why do we need alternating current for every application.. we continue to build massive plants to generate THOUSAND of volts of power but we haven't mastered line loss.... or used lower voltage power for residential .. it just seems to me that superconductors aren't researched much... like was said.. $$$$ DRIVEN energy... FORCE every power plant to go non profit.. no stock holders pressing .. no stock market sways in safety etc..

  • @dean Somehow a windmill blade just doesn't seem to have the same impact as a plume containing Cesium and Iodine circulating the globe.. :-)

  • @dean If you consider only the $$$ cost of Nuclear Fuel Powered Stations from the initial stages of development to the eventual decommissioning of the NFPS when it becomes unsafe to operate or obsolete, I think you'll find NFPS are far from cost effective and it is the public that foots the bill for this technology not only financially but in the event of an accident the financial costs have little meaning considering the long term devastation to all life forms from nuclear fission in a state of criticality, IMHO.

  • My earlier point was, that plutonium was not supposed to spread far because it was heavy. Now we find out that it crossed almost the whole US, and all the Atlantic in the 1950s.

  • @Scilla Obviously, there is surface and ground temp.....so the ground temp even if higher to cause evap, cannot happen if surface is below boiling

  • @Bobby1 The fact thats it is "heavy" makes no diffference to how far it can travel.
    The term heavy charged particle refers to those energetic particles whose mass is one atomic mass unit or greater. This category includes alpha particles, together with protons, deuterons, fission fragments, and other energetic heavy particles often produced in accelerators. These particles carry at least one electronic charge, and they interact with matter primarily through the Coulomb force that exists between the positive charge on the particle and the negative charge on electrons that are part of the absorber material. In this case, the force is an attractive one between the two opposite charges.

  • @Bobby that's because especially iodine has a very low boiling point.. so it gets vaporized if sufficiently hot and escapes with steam.. things like plutonium have very high boiling/vapour points

  • @dean, I am asking because of the enormous size of reactors # 5 and 6 at Fukushima. I recall the average size of a block in Germany as being about 400MW. The max number of blocks is three. Hence, #6 alone is larger than an entire German plant.

  • Also mentioned in the Kyodo news article Reed just posted: "Meanwhile, concern grew over the state of the No. 3 reactor at one point, as the agency said in the afternoon that the temperature of part of its reactor pressure vessel was found to be rising suddenly. But TEPCO officials said the data were likely due to a glitch in a measuring instrument, because other temperature data related to the vessel has not shown a similar rise."

  • @Markfm I learned most of my German from watching German TV on cable, reading German websites and my hubby who is partially fluent in it. The character change totally throws me. I need to find that software language program they advertise on the boob toob, I think they have a Japanese one. :-)

  • @Bobby1 There was an explosion or blast. In some nuclear testing the bombs were detonated in the upper atmosphere, its more lethal that way.
