Fukushima prefecture struck by major tremor

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.4 jolted Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Thursday.

The Meteorological Agency says the tremor occurred shortly after 7 PM, centered off Fukushima Prefecture.
The agency says there was no tsunami.

The quake registered a maximum intensity of 5-plus on the Japanese scale of zero to 7.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says the quake has not interfered with its attempts to stabilize three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, crippled since the nuclear crisis began in March.

The utility adds that no changes have been observed in data on radiation levels measured at monitoring posts near the crippled plant.

  • India eager for nuclear power pact with Japan

India's top nuclear official has stated the country's desire to conclude an atomic energy agreement with Japan.

India held an international seminar in Mumbai on Thursday to discuss the country's future atomic power generation in the wake of the nuclear accident at the Fukushima power plant in Japan.

Speaking to reporters, the Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission, Srikumar Banerjee, expressed eagerness to conclude a nuclear energy agreement with Japan. He said Japan has advanced nuclear technology and that concluding a bilateral agreement will benefit both nations.

However, negotiations to conclude the treaty remain stalled.

Japan has been hesitant to sign the agreement, because India has not joined the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

In addition, Japan's policy on exporting nuclear power plant technology has been in flux following the accident in Fukushima.

Unseasonable cherry blossoms in typhoon-hit area
A cherry tree blooms by the side of the Nachi River in the typhoon-hit town of Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture, on Sept. 29, 2011. Experts said the tree might have unseasonably bloomed after heavy rain brought by Typhoon Talas in early September deprived it of its leaves and prevented it from entering a dormant state before blooming next spring. • @Edano I do not understand India , they are capable of independence yet they are going with Japan comps where the deal is usually that Japan comp
owns the plant for the first 20 - 30 yrs then hand it over who wants to be taking responsibility for a 20+ yr old plant

  • @elainekirk i think india is seeking acceptance of its nuke capabilities and access to the fuel cycle. since noone cooperates with them, they only can address japan or russia. they have to get rid of their spent fuel.
    by Edano 9/29/2011 7:39:10 PM

  • it is a common misunderstanding that nuke power brings independence. on the contrary, you are dependent of the global nuke industry. you need enriched fuel and recycling.

Report in Japanese about worker exposure at Fukushima Daiichi. The positions (green, orange, pink circles) and movements (red and black arrows) of the workers inside control rooms and the direction of the wind (blue arrows) are shown on the maps on page 53 (units 1&2 control room) and 54 (units 3&4 control room) (pdf page numbers). Pages 35, 36, 52, 53 provide detailed timelines of the tasks performed by four workers named "C", "D", "E", and "F". The table on page 40 describes the exposure circumstances for twenty workers (A ~ F, ア ~ セ). The column 1 on the left is their internal contamination in mSv, column 2 says if they wore a mask, column 3 if they ate or drank(有=yes, 無=no), column 4 if they wore glasses (temples may create an interstice through which contaminated air can leak), column 5 if they worked near the door. The table page 42 provides the radiations in cpm measured at units 3&4 control room on 13 March from 10:00 AM to 01:30 PM. Column 1 (on the left) at the front door, column 2 at the emergency door, column 3 at the desk unit 3 side, column 4 at the desk unit 4 side.

  • “The nuclear crisis in Fukushima-Daiichi raises many basic questions which need to be addressed so as to improve the planning and management of nuclear power plants in accordance with the highest standards,” he said.
“It revealed that the world is exposed to real and systematic risks, and not just hypothetical ones, with incalculable costs and the necessity of developing an international political coordination the likes of which have never been seen,” he said.
The long-term effects of the disaster include economical, medical and rebuilding costs in one of Japan’s richest agricultural areas.
Msgr. Banach asked members about properly maintaining current plants and destroying old plants.
“Does nuclear fission technology, or the construction of new atomic power plants, or the continued operation of existing ones exclude human error in its phases of design, normal and emergency operation?” Well, at least someone knows the right questions to ask.... www.catholicfreepress.org www.catholicfreepress.org

  • ajw.asahi.com about the "cold shutdown" thing. lots of confusion. i don't understand why they cling to this expression. it is misleading and deceptive. is chernobyl in cold shutdown ?????
    by Edano 9/29/2011 8:38:50 PM

  • @Edano the correct term would be "we don't know where the corium is". I think with the fuel out of the reactors and either moved away or cooled by indirect water they may have changed the watering method to cool the RPV's down. Notice they did that and a week or so later said look! we have cold shutdown the RPVs are all under 100 degrees (never mind the fuel isn't there).
